The term brownfield refers to a site of which at least 50 percent is no longer occupied by its original use, but which has not been entirely redeveloped. Only sites of at least 1 hectare in size are included in the database. Land that has not been developed in the past («greenfield land») is not classified as brownfield, even if the land is located within an industrial zone.
