Definition of brownfield sites

The brownfield database contains sites which are at least one hectare in size. The term brownfield refers to land of which at least 50 percent is no longer occupied by its original use, but which has not been entirely redeveloped. The site was previously used for manufacturing, repair or storage activities and is either free for redevelopment or will be available in the near future. Land that has not been developed in the past («greenfield land») is not classified as brownfield, even if the land is located within an industrial zone.
